If you are going to Centrifuge, please pay Austin for your remaining balance. Austin has your bill.

 

On June 11th after youth group, we will be having a Centrifuge meeting. All students that are going must be there with a parent.

We still need an adult male to go with us to Centrifuge. If you are willing to go, see Austin today.

 

Commissioning Service for the 2008 Hazel Green, Kentucky Mission Team will be tonight during the evening service.

Mission team members and parents will meet today at 5 pm.

Packing for the mission trip will be June 14th at 8:30 pm.

We will be leaving to go to Hazel Green, June 15th after having lunch in the fellowship building.

 

If you signed up to bring food items for the Hazel Green Mission trip, please bring perishable food by Wednesday, June 11. Money donations may be given to Janie or Ginger or placed in the offering plate in an envelope marked Kentucky Mission Trip Food.

 

Please pray for our 2008 Mission Team. Also pray for Goldie whose house we will be repairing and especially her husband who is sick and is not a Christian.

The 100th Anniversary Committee now has 5 x 7 note cards with envelopes for sale: Ten cards in a gold box with a clear-vue cover and sealed with an official 100th Anniversary seal. The drawing on the cream-colored, embossed frame card is a pen and ink illustration of the original wood church drawn from an old newspaper photo provided by one of our oldest member, Mrs. Janie Garrett. It was drawn by Cindy Lodge. On the back of the card is a medallion celebrating the 100th Anniversary of our church and a small glimpse into the past—something about a chicken….Cost per box is $5. Wednesday night is missions night. All organizations will meet.

 

It is time to start praying and see if God is calling you to go and help build our eighth church in Mexico, November 7th-16th. There is a sign-up sheet in the vestibule. Do you have your passport?

Vacation Bible School, July 13th-18th from 6:00 pm until 8:30 pm.

 

The 100th Anniversary Celebration Cookbooks have arrived. If you ordered books and have not received them, please see Joni Addis. If you did not pre-order, it’s not too late to get a book! Books are $12 each. Please give money to Joni or place a well-marked envelope in the offering plate.

 

We need your help! The Flora Anne Group is busy working on plans for our Homecoming Celebration to be held on September 7, 2008. We need anyone who has pictures or mementos to share to give them to Kat Albertson or Susan Yates. We ask that you clearly mark on the back your name and the person(s) in the picture and/or the facts about the picture/mementos. We will carefully display your pictures and mementos in the Fellowship Building on Homecoming. We also would like any newspaper articles, old bulletins or anything pertaining to the church and ask that you clearly mark any you give as yours. We need time to fix our displays and document the information, and we will be sure to return your articles to you promptly after the celebration. Please help us gather all we can about our history.

Mexico Church

Bible Study Fellowship

Bible Study Fellowship will be at 10:00 am in the Fellowship Building on July 20th. Also the Church Council will be meeting at 5:00 pm in the Young Married Class on July 20th. Please note that this is a change!

Vacation Bible School will be July 13th-18th from 6:00 pm until 8:30 pm.

Centennial Moment

Can you believe?

In the early days of our church, we held church conference on the fourth Saturday night of the month (that’s right, Saturday night!)

In 1914, the church voted to divide the congregation into four parts for the deacons to visit and see what the members would give for the next year.

In 1916, pillars were built under the church for $37.50.

In 1917, we began meeting the second and the fourth Sunday of each month.

The total paid to our pastor during the entire year of 1910 was $129.49. We did better in 1911 by giving the pastor a total of $204.25.

Can you believe in 1917 that 1,814,988 cars were produced in 22 states and the average cost per car was $720. Gasoline was only 25 cents per gallon. My how times have changed.

Young at Heart

Due to crowded conditions on Lake Jocassee in the summer months, we have moved our boat tour to October 11th. We will have a two-hour tour and a catered lunch. Details will come later. Your committee is also working on a summer picnic and will announce plans soon.

Providence Christian Academy is offering A Summer Discovery Camp during the months of June and July. There will be curriculum and Bible-based activities. Today is our emphasis on the Frances Eller Associational Offering. This year’s motto is “Joining Hands-Touching Lives” and the church goal is $600. Won’t you please pray and give as your heart directs to this most worthy contribution. We will receive this offering next Sunday, May 25th.

Children’s choir practice today at 5:00 pm in the choir room.

 

The children’s choir will be presenting “I Am a Promise” tonight at 7:00 pm. Don’t miss it!

 

We will observe baptism tonight at the close of the evening service. Candidates need to meet at 6:30 pm in Austin’s office.

 

Please join us in the Fellowship Hall tonight after the evening service for sandwiches and dessert in honor of the Pastor’s 17th Anniversary of service. A basket for cards of appreciation will be provided.

You are invited to a church-wide wedding shower for Jared Simpson and his fiancé, Carla Rogers, on May 20, 2008, from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm in the fellowship building. Jared and Carla are registered at Belk and Bed, Bath and Beyond. There will also be a basket for gift cards or monetary gifts. Jared is Ken and Linda Simpson’s son.

 

The AWANA awards ceremony will be held Wednesday night at 7:00. Please come and support the children. The end-of-the-year AWANA party will be held the following Wednesday night. There is a sign-up sheet in the vestibule for the AWANA leader appreciation dinner that will be held on Saturday, May 24th at 6:00 pm at Just More BBQ in Pendleton. Please sign up by the 21st.

 

We will not have our regular Wednesday night Bible Study this Wednesday. All adults are invited to the auditorium for the AWANA Awards ceremony.

 

We will be ordering medallions for T-ball and Coaches pitch players. The order has to be placed no later than Tuesday, May 20th. The cost will be $5; this includes the medallion, which will be engraved, and a ribbon. We received $477 for our special offering for the SC Baptist Ministries for the aging.

 

We want to thank our church family for all the love, prayers and thoughts bestowed upon us during the loss of our grandson, Joseph Perry on May 5th. The Lord provided us with the strength to endure this loss because He heard everyone’s prayers. Bless you all. We are also grateful for the dinner provide by the church. June is the month that we honor our fathers:

The first celebration of Father’s Day is thought to have been in July 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. Grace Golden Clayton suggested the special observance to her pastor after a deadly explosion in a nearby town killed 361 men.

Soon after, Sonoro Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, wanted to show her gratitude to her father, who’d cared for the family after his wife died. Dodd asked her pastor to choose a June Sunday to honor all fathers, and he selected June 19, 1910.

In 1924, President Coolidge suggested that Father’s Day become a national holiday. In 1966, President Johnson designated the third Sunday of June to be Father’s Day. Six years later, President Nixon instituted Father’s Day as a national observance

Studies show that if the mother of a family attends worship, there’s a 16 percent change that the rest of the family will also attend.

Yet when a father attends worship, there’s a 93 percent chance that other family members will be present too.

Just think, Dad, of the clout you have. Hope to see you in church this weekend!

The Pickens County Sheriff’s office will be providing a church Security and Safety Seminar on Monday evening, June 2 from 6:00-9:30 pm and Saturday morning, June 7 from 9:00 am-12:30 pm. If any of the church security team can go with the pastor on Monday, June 2nd, please contact him.

 

2008 Graduates

Sunday, June 1st, we will honor our graduates in the 11:00 AM Service. Please wear your cap and gown. You will be marching into the service.

We will move our Sunday night service to Liberty Middle School for Baccalaureate service starting at 6:30 pm.

 

Mexico Church

Brittany Grace McMahan invites the church family to her graduation from Liberty High School. The Commencement Exercises will be Friday, June 6th at 10:00 am at Littlejohn Coliseum, Clemson University.

We have received a thank you from David S. Dockery from Union University, Jackson, TN for our donation given to help rebuild their university that was badly damaged by a tornado on February 5th.

Centennial Moment: In 1940, President Roosevelt was elected to a third term, and in 1944 was elected to his fourth term which was a first in history. President Roosevelt died shortly after his forth term began. See if you remember any of the following trivia facts of the 1940’s:

Royal Crown bottled drinks with holes in the lid under the cork so you could use the bottle later to sprinkle your clothes before ironing them.

A popular candy was coke-shaped bottles filled with colored water. They came in their own little carrying case.

Butch wax for flat top haircuts.

Skates that clamped onto you shoes and used a skate key to tighten.

The dreaded disease of polio.

Green Stamps given with purchases so you could save up for a selection out of the green stamp catalog.

On March 29, 1949, First Baptist Norris voted to purchase a register for Training Union (Discipleship Training) to hang on the wall indicating the number of attendance and the number who read their Bible everyday during the past week. How would we compare today?

 

The 100 Anniversary Team now has 5 x 7 note cards with envelopes for sale: Ten cards in a gold box with a clear-vue cover and sealed with an official 100th Anniversary seal. The drawing on the cream-colored, embossed frame card is a pen and ink illustration of the original wood church drawn from an old newspaper photo provided by one of our oldest members, Mrs. Janie Garrett. It was drawn by Cindy Lodge. On the back of the card is a medallion celebrating the 100th Anniversary of our church and a small glimpse into the past. Cost per box is $5. VBS, 2008

Join us for the Outrigger Island VBS training on Sunday, June 22nd at 5:00 pm. The Surf’s up, so grab your surfboard and head for the waves as we plan an awesome week of sharing Christ’s love. During VBS 2008, kids will know, speak and live God’s truth-Island Style. All teachers, helpers and special areas are invited to attend. We hope to see you there! ALOHA!

Bulletin: Week of 04/27/08

All students, parents and adults who are planning to go on the Mission Trip, please meet after the 11:00 am Service today. This is a very important meeting! You will receive Volunteer Personal Information and your medical forms that will be necessary for this trip.

 

Children’s choir practice today at 5:00 pm in the choir room.

 

We will have a called church conference after the evening worship service to hear from the Properties Team on the fence for the children’s playground.

 

The Davis’ will provide snacks and the Bolin’s will provide drinks for Revolution, Wednesday, April 30th.

 

Today is the last day to purchase a rose in memory or in honor of Mother’s Day. Please sign up in the vestibule, Sunday School Classrooms and fellowship building. The cost of a rose is $3. Orders and money must be turned in today. You can pay Jeri Cook or Judy Thomas.

We will have our last Norris Fest meeting today at 4:45 pm in the auditorium. If you are ministering in any way at the Norris Fest, please be at this meeting today. We will have our prayer walk Tuesday at the park starting at 7 pm.

 

We are celebrating Senior Adult Sunday on May 4th and will have Rev. Fred Pittman speaking in the morning services. Our Seniors will be conducting the 11 am Service and providing the music. All senior adults are invited to have lunch together in the fellowship building. We have decided not to have the lunch outside. Please bring a well-filled basket and let’s have fellowship together.

 

Choir practice for all senior adults will be today at 6:00 pm in the choir room.

 

Acteens will meet Saturday, May 24th from 10 am - 12 noon downstairs in the church.

 

We received $1,845 for the Gideons from our church. Thank you for being faithful to sow the word of God!

 

Silent Auction, Today, 8:15am-9:00pm in the fellowship building. Please come out and make your bid on meals to local restaurants, a transmission service, a hunting trip, Wood crafts, embroidering, home décor, CWP training and more.

 

Our big fundraiser for the Summer Mission trip to Hazel Green, KY will be May 3rd. Pancakes and gravy biscuits served for breakfast, hot dogs for lunch, a car wash and a huge yard sale. Fellowship building will be open on Friday, May 2nd for you to drop off any yard sale items.

 

Don’t forget to mark your envelope “Union” for the Union University Disaster Relief Fund and place it in the regular offering.

 

On Friday, May 16th, Stephanie Thomas will be participating in American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” in Anderson. Relay is ACS’s primary fundraising event for cancer research, education, advocacy and service. They will be outlining the walking track with luminaries, which are candles in paper bags with sand. For a $10 donation to ACS, a luminaria will be placed at the Relay event in honor or in memory of your loved one or friend. Sign-up sheet is in the vestibule and the deadline to sign up is May 11th.

 

AWANA Awards Day is Wednesday, May 21st. AWANA Teacher/Helper Appreciation is scheduled for Saturday, May 24th. AWANA Party is Wednesday, May 28th, the last day of AWANA.

 

RA’s GA’s and Mission Friends will begin meeting on June 4th at 7:00 pm.

 

We will be doing a new church directory in August: The dates are August 27, 28, 29 and 30th.

Since I have been accused, on occasion, of being a Baptcostal, I thought you would enjoy the following. A big thanks to Dale Dalton for sending it to me:

A Baptist preacher and his wife decided to get a new dog. Ever mindful of the congregation, they knew the dog must also be a Baptist

They visited kennel after kennel and explained their needs.

Finally, they found a kennel whose owner assured them he had just the dog they wanted.

The owner brought the dog to meet the pastor and his wife. “Fetch the Bible,” he commanded. The dog bounded to the bookshelf, scrutinized the books, located the Bible and brought it to the owner. Now find Psalm 23,” he commanded. The dog dropped the Bible to the floor, and showing marvelous dexterity with his paws, leafed through and finding the correct passage and pointed to it with his paw.

The pastor and his wife were very impressed and purchased the dog. That evening, a group of church members came to visit. The pastor and his wife began to show off the dog, having him locate several Bible verses. The visitors were very impressed.

One man asked, “can he do regular dog tricks, too?”

“I haven’t tried yet,” the pastor replied.

He pointed his finger at the dog. ”HEEL!” the pastor commanded.

The dog immediately jumped on a chair, placed one paw on the pastor’s forehead and  began to howl.

The pastor looked at his wife in shock and said, “good Lord! He’s ‘Pentecostal!’”

Acteens will meet on Saturday, April 12th from 10:00 am-12:00 noon in the church, downstairs in the room on the left past the water fountain.

 

Centennial Moment

Does anyone remember years ago, 1950-1955, when our church had a feud called the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s? To the best of one person’s memory, the feud was between some of our classes and was an effort to raise attendance and resulted in a lot of fun. We had our celebration in the old school house, and we dressed in “Hilly Billy” style. Also in the early 1950’s, “Howdy Doody” was the number one children’s program on the new medium of TV. Howdy had a permanent smile with 48 freckles on his little face (one for each state of the union). Those were happy times!!

 

Fundraiser for Summer Mission Trip

Our annual BIG fund-raiser for the Summer Mission trip to Hazel Green, KY will be May 3rd. We will have a pancake breakfast, hotdog lunch, carwash and yard sale. The fellowship building will be open on Friday, May 2nd for you to drop off any yard sale items.

Norris Fest

We will have our Prayer Walk for the Norris Fest, Tuesday, May 6th from 7 pm-8 pm at the park. Plan on being there.

Norris Fest is Saturday, May 10th from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm. Workers need to be at the park no later than 10:00 am. We will be working Friday night beginning at 6:00 pm. Please come Friday night if you can. We will be cleaning up, moving bleachers, etc.

 

Parent/Child Dedication Service

If you need to participate in a Parent/Child Dedication Service on Mother’s Day, please let the church office know.

Pain In The Pews: As pastors, faith leaders, and lay people we reach out to individuals who are hurting, battling with the blows of life, living in a world of chaos and sinking in an abyss of despair. We assemble outreach ministries, street patrols, prayer partners and much more to reach out to those in pain. But what happens when the pain is in the pews. What happens when those overwhelmed with mental illness, addiction, suicide, and grief are our elders, choir members, deacons, greeters or Sunday school teachers? How do we reach and respond to families and children that are in crisis in the church?
