June is the month that we honor our fathers:
The first celebration of Father’s Day is thought to have been in July 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. Grace Golden Clayton suggested the special observance to her pastor after a deadly explosion in a nearby town killed 361 men.
Soon after, Sonoro Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, wanted to show her gratitude to her father, who’d cared for the family after his wife died. Dodd asked her pastor to choose a June Sunday to honor all fathers, and he selected June 19, 1910.
In 1924, President Coolidge suggested that Father’s Day become a national holiday. In 1966, President Johnson designated the third Sunday of June to be Father’s Day. Six years later, President Nixon instituted Father’s Day as a national observance
Studies show that if the mother of a family attends worship, there’s a 16 percent change that the rest of the family will also attend.
Yet when a father attends worship, there’s a 93 percent chance that other family members will be present too.
Just think, Dad, of the clout you have. Hope to see you in church this weekend!
Living for Jesus, Bro. Royce

Centennial News
Centennial Moment: In 1940, President Roosevelt was elected to a third term, and in 1944 was elected to his fourth term which was a first in history. President Roosevelt died shortly after his forth term began. See if you remember any of the following trivia facts of the 1940’s:
Royal Crown bottled drinks with holes in the lid under the cork so you could use the bottle later to sprinkle your clothes before ironing them.
A popular candy was coke-shaped bottles filled with colored water. They came in their own little carrying case.
Butch wax for flat top haircuts.
Skates that clamped onto you shoes and used a skate key to tighten.
The dreaded disease of polio.
Green Stamps given with purchases so you could save up for a selection out of the green stamp catalog.
On March 29, 1949, First Baptist Norris voted to purchase a register for Training Union (Discipleship Training) to hang on the wall indicating the number of attendance and the number who read their Bible everyday during the past week. How would we compare today?
The 100 Anniversary Team now has 5 x 7 note cards with envelopes for sale: Ten cards in a gold box with a clear-vue cover and sealed with an official 100th Anniversary seal. The drawing on the cream-colored, embossed frame card is a pen and ink illustration of the original wood church drawn from an old newspaper photo provided by one of our oldest members, Mrs. Janie Garrett. It was drawn by Cindy Lodge. On the back of the card is a medallion celebrating the 100th Anniversary of our church and a small glimpse into the past. Cost per box is $5. See Cindy Lodge to get yours or send an e-mail to cindylodge@bellsouth.net, and I will make sure I get them to you. Make checks payable to First Baptist Church, Norris, Thanks, Cindy
