Newsletter: Week of 04/23/08

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Since I have been accused, on occasion, of being a Baptcostal, I thought you would enjoy the following. A big thanks to Dale Dalton for sending it to me:

A Baptist preacher and his wife decided to get a new dog. Ever mindful of the congregation, they knew the dog must also be a Baptist

They visited kennel after kennel and explained their needs.

Finally, they found a kennel whose owner assured them he had just the dog they wanted.

The owner brought the dog to meet the pastor and his wife. “Fetch the Bible,” he commanded. The dog bounded to the bookshelf, scrutinized the books, located the Bible and brought it to the owner. Now find Psalm 23,” he commanded. The dog dropped the Bible to the floor, and showing marvelous dexterity with his paws, leafed through and finding the correct passage and pointed to it with his paw.

The pastor and his wife were very impressed and purchased the dog. That evening, a group of church members came to visit. The pastor and his wife began to show off the dog, having him locate several Bible verses. The visitors were very impressed.

One man asked, “can he do regular dog tricks, too?”

“I haven’t tried yet,” the pastor replied.

He pointed his finger at the dog. ”HEEL!” the pastor commanded.

The dog immediately jumped on a chair, placed one paw on the pastor’s forehead and  began to howl.

The pastor looked at his wife in shock and said, “good Lord! He’s ‘Pentecostal!’”

Centennial Moment

Does anyone remember years ago, 1950-1955, when our church had a feud called the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s? To the best of one person’s memory, the feud was between some of our classes and was an effort to raise attendance and resulted in a lot of fun. We had our celebration in the old school house, and we dressed in “Hilly Billy” style. Also in the early 1950’s, “Howdy Doody” was the number one children’s program on the new medium of TV. Howdy had a permanent smile with 48 freckles on his little face (one for each state of the union). Those were happy times!!

Pain In The Pews: As pastors, faith leaders, and lay people we reach out to individuals who are hurting, battling with the blows of life, living in a world of chaos and sinking in an abyss of despair. We assemble outreach ministries, street patrols, prayer partners and much more to reach out to those in pain. But what happens when the pain is in the pews. What happens when those overwhelmed with mental illness, addiction, suicide, and grief are our elders, choir members, deacons, greeters or Sunday school teachers? How do we reach and respond to families and children that are in crisis in the church?
