Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Dear Church Family,

Well it’s almost here! Our church will celebrate 100 years of serving our Lord Jesus Christ on September 7th. I hope you are planning on being here. We will not have the 8:45 am Worship Service; instead, we will start our celebration at 10 AM in the auditorium. It will be a very exciting day.

In the last few weeks, I’ve asked myself what would our founding fathers think of church today? More important, what does Jesus think? We do a lot of activities, and we have to be sure our motives are right. Are we doing these things so God will receive glory and honor from it? Are we doing these things so others will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ? We have to do the work while we can. Jesus said in John 9:4, “I must work the works of Him that sent me, while it is day; the night cometh, when no man can work.” We have to do the work, but we must be sure we are doing it for the right reasons! Let’s leave a legacy for our children and grandchildren of God’s faithfulness and love!

Living for Jesus, Bro. Royce

Newsletter: Month of 08/2008

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Wow! July has come and gone. We had a great Vacation Bible School. A special thanks to everyone for all the hard work, especially Janie swords and Tina Kelly. We praise God for the 17 children who prayed to receive Christ.

After such a busy month, I think you can say amen to the following story:

An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard; I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of.

He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep.

An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.

The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for several weeks.

Curious I pinned a note to his collar: ‘I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.’

The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar: ‘He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3-he’s trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?’

(Thanks to Missy Sammons for e-mailing this story.)

Living for Jesus, Bro. Royce

Centennial Moments

In 1912, a courageous young woman named Lottie Moon gave her life for the call of missions in China. Following her example, the Southern Baptist Convention established an Auxiliary for Women whose soul purpose is to carry out the Great Commission.

Through this Auxiliary, First Baptist Church Norris organized the Woman’s Missionary Society. The following ladies served as president of the Woman’s Missionary Society from 1925-1958: Mrs. E. C. McWhorter, Mrs. M. B. Garrett, Mrs. Mary Henderson, Mrs. E. O. Gilstrap, Mrs. Ann Tate, Miss Flora Garrett, Mrs. J. D. Gillespie, Jr., Mrs. Alice Porter, Mrs. Vard Garrett, Mrs. Woodrow Cater.

In 1959, The Woman’s Missionary Society was changed to the Woman’s Missionary Union and instead of there being presidents, there were directors. The following ladies served as director from 1959 to the present. Some of these ladies served for a number of years: Lois Gaines, Sara Smith, Wanza Cook, Tina Wilson, Ida Whelchel, Lib Howe, Ethel Hines, Alice Lawton, Jeri Cook, Geri Martin, Kat Albertson, Janie Swords, Ginger Haynes, Lois Gilstrap, June Hunter, Susan Yates, Rebecca Platts, Mindy Bolin, Deborah Holder, Becky Harper, Michelle Stancil.

Included in the WMU Organization are Mission Friends, formerly know as Sunbeams; Girls in Action, formerly know as Girls Auxiliary; and Acteens, formerly know as Young Women’s Auxiliary. In 1970, an organization for Baptist Young Women was established for Young Adults. At some point in the past, First Baptist Norris established the Brotherhood now known as Baptist Men of the Church. In 1931, Mrs. Ann Tate, as WMU president, began the Royal Ambassadors for the boys.

Throughout the years the women of WMU of our church have faithfully set goals for different missions offerings: Lottie Moon For International Missions, Annie Armstrong for North American Missions, Janie Chapman for State Missions and Frances Eller for Associational Missions.

As recorded in our church minutes of September 25, 1909, an offering for missions was taken in the amount of $1.35. The record does not state what mission effort was supported, but on May 21, 1910, we have recorded that an offering was taken for state missions, and the amount collected was $3.67. As a church we have come a long way from our first recorded mission offering of $1.35. In 2007 our total mission offering was $32.698. This includes Lottie Moon, Annie Armstrong, Janie Chapman, Frances Eller, The Cooperative Program and World Hunger.

Not only do our ladies of WMU lead the church in reaching our offering goals, but are involved in mission action projects each month supporting organizations such as United Christian Ministries, Helping Hands, Meals On Wheels, The Free Medical Clinic and others.

As we look forward to the next 100 years, may we be found faithful in our love and support for missions and for carrying out The Great Commission.

Matthew 28:18-20 says: Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing the in the Name of the Father, and of The Son and of The Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the end of the age.
